a comprehensive guide to internet insecurity

there seem to be some people that are more able to be unlucky than the rest of the world. always at the wrong time at the wrong spot, they run into all kinds of troubles.
the good news are that to compete with their infallible sense of timing you don't need to leave your house anymore. a simple computer with internet connection are already enough (if set up properly) to get yourself attacked, robbed, cheated, etc. Simply follow these instructions.

Some Cambridge guys really did a good job with this.

linux is perfect - but

i had a nice linux moment today - finally getting my university login for printing my scripts for my exam preparation. the computer rooms are great; somebody thought quite far ahead, putting 2 screens at each pc. and also linux for working is reasonable - until one has to print a pdf with 4 slides per page rotated in the correct way and duplex print.

hmmm..

the admin told me cups won't like to turn the pages for me (nor did it scale them properly...) so what should i do?

the answer is trivial: if you can't rotate the paper, rotate the whole document! luckily adobe reader has the functionality for this. So what's left after is to set the orientation of the printer to "horizontal - inverse" and you're done!

easy as pie :P

As real as possible

When once upon a time people pushed the use of pc's in offices very often 'reducing paper' and therefore 'increasing tidyness' and 'better organization' were important selling points - as virtual desktops somehow tend to enforce these things.. but for the price of keeping people structured against their natural habits :)
As now it becomes fashionable to adapt machines more to human needs than vice versa, new interfaces start to make chaos possible again.

Reply all...

is probably one of the most stupid functions if in the wrong hands! It really gets me upset when people can not control themselves and spam everybody's (including my) inbox with their absolutely peanut responses! I mean, this is what most groups have a coordinator for.. so only one person has to bother about this stuff...

Maybe I shouldn't be so annoyed but rather feel priviledged to know that one person was not able to read the correct time in an email and therefore made another appointment which in turn will cause him to be late to a rehearsal for about half an hour but actually itdoesntinterestme because icannotevenbethere!!!

Size matters?

There is always some new things in life to surprise you.. In fact, I have heard a lot of funny comments about my computer, starting from pocket calculator, to 'whohoo, you and your sexy compter'. But the nicest one I observed yesterday, when someone looked it and went

"Ooh, this is so sweet! How do you open it? Does it also work properly?"

So now you know what you would need in order for some people to chat you up (even though I must admit it worked better before the new McBook was released ;)

About the gender of computers

Somewhere on the internet the following reasoning about the issue was discovered:

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that
in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as
either masculine or feminine.

'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.'
'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'

A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'
Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the
class into two groups, male and female, and asked
them to decide for themselves whether "computer"
should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each
group was asked to give four reasons for its
recommendation.

The men's group decided that 'computer' should
definitely be of the feminine gender ('la
computadora'), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their
internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with
other computers is incomprehensible to everyone
else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long
term memory for possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you
find yourself spending half your paycheck on
accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers
should be Masculine ('el computador'), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to
turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for
themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems,
but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if
you had waited a little longer, you could have
gotten a better model.

of COURSE computers can do magic!

if you believe it already, then don't bother.. otherwise you can find the proof here!
(or maybe it is just a cunning algorithm? who knows...)
either way, I think I found the solution..
have fun and tell me if you found it too!
