or what people do to disguise good music... It is not the first example of nice spelling of music titles but this seemed a really stunning example to how people percieve foreign language texts, slogans and lyrics...
In Germany, recently a survey was conducted to find out, how much people were understanding of the fancy English advertisement lines. The result was - how to put this? - spectacular.
One example is the following article, 'Life by Gorgeus - Leben in Georgien'
As a result of these findings, the trend now seems to move to a re-germanizing of the marketing scene ('Come in and find out').
We'll see how things will continue, just "Kommen Sie rein und finden Sie wieder raus" :) Enjoy!

I can understand that people want to know what their name means... however, on occasions, I'm a bit startled by the results of some of these thing that are sent to me. (Ok, I admit, I'm trying them, out of curiosity... ;)

For example, there is the following alphabet:

I'm not sure this was what my parents had in mind when giving me that name... (luckily there is another one, but I'm not going to tell).

On the other hand, there is some snazzy application for facebook, the name analyzer... According to the application's page, "A sophisticated computer algorithm analyzed your name, discovering the following meaning." Well, I found that this algorithm must be incredibly sophisticated, especially considering the result it yielded for me..

Especially the mixture of adjectives was such as to amaze me deeply. Maybe I have some hidden split personality, needed as a dump for accomodating all of these qualities.

Luckily, there is some other way for figuring out the meaning of ones name. It is not that modern but still on occasions a bit mysterious and interesting. One could just go back to find the etymological roots and, once found, their meaning is quite likely to contain a bit more sense :)

Now being back in Munich, I keep falling back into memories all the time. The title of this blog is a line from Tschaikowsky's opera 'Eugen Onegin', a story of which I could admire the Bayerisches Staatsballet in the danced version on a memorable evening, once upon a time. It is the tragic story of a man who rejects every friendship and his only true love out of his pride and arrogance, causing incredible pain to those around him and in the end also to himself. When he realises that he lost all that have truly cared about him, it is too late to turn back and he remains, full of grief and regrets, alone.
This ballet was breathtaking, yet at the same time heartbreaking to watch and I left being moved and maybe with some teardrop in my eye. I havent forgotten this evening, even though it was years ago.

Dreams are my reality... (or better not!)

On occasions I get really weird dreams, usually with people and places I know well and it seems as if all that could be or become real. Strangely enough, a lot of situations occur after some while in a very similar manner (luckily usually not the worst of my dreams though). I find this a bit strange and so I was wondering what you think of dreaming, if you ever wake up searching for reality or if you never remember anything. You are very welcome to share your opinions, am looking forward to your comments.

holiday stress

It is amazing, I couldnt wish for these holidays to arrive soon enough and now... imagine what happened. I send off my laptop to repair and instead am blocking my brothers desktop all day, fixing it up, just to have an excuse for remaining logged into skype for not missing out on my normal life. It feels so weird not being in the faculty every day, not meeting all the people.. (I have to admit, I kinda miss you guys 'n girls).
Surely it is nice to be home again and slowly I also manage to meet some of the people that I've been missing. However, there is so much time I've got to myself that I dont know how to deal with it. (I've already finished off Harry Potter for that reason..) To be honest, feeling that I'm not doing anything just makes me nervous. On the other hand, there are so many possibilities that I cant even decide what to do first... And there isnt even anyone to bother me.. So my only hope is that I still have about 3 weeks to get used to all of this workless time so I will at least (as supposed) miss it when I'm coming back to Bolzano.

Harry Potter in 13 hours....

I made it! :) Now, one week after my thesis defense I was able to spend a day that finally made me feel I am on holiday! After restraining myself for months on starting the last Harry Potter I wasted a day, took the book, did not leave my room all day (not even to eat, as my brother was agreeing on me deserving a lazy day and passing me a banana ;) and took the whole thing in in one go. (ok, I had one break, fell asleep at some point cause I started reading at 2am after getting home from going out but I neatlessly resumed after waking up at one :P) Now I'm feeling fresh and reborn, starting to get hungry again and getting ready for some of my tasks again.
I hope the ones of you that have to work dont take this post badly, I'm thinking of you and I will join you again very soon.. Have a good night ;)

Too much to do

It seems a strange thing, but since I finished my thesis with presentation and all, I feel that I'm even busier than before... I just realised that I havent even been to my kitchen since Tuesday evening and I cant at all remember what is in my fridge.. Also my laundry is absolutely piling up and my Todo list is exploding... seriously wonder if that is normal...
Now I'm preparing to leave Bolzano for a month, spend two weeks at home with my family before jetting off to Good Ol' England ;)
Hope to see you all before leaving this Sunday, but if we dont manage to meet, please dont be angry, ok? Will be back soon anyway.

Jippiee, I still cant believe it, but I'm so happy that I now finished my studies! The presentation apparently went really well and I was really amazed how many of you took their time to support me for my presentation! It really did me well and I'm grateful for it, especially as my family couldnt make it today. Big hugs for you all, now I will go and sleep in the sunshine ;)

Deadlines

Now the last deadline for my thesis presentation is approaching.. today I will have to hand in my presentation and all that will remain to be done is practising the presentation and getting my long overdue beautysleep...
At least this is how it is supposed to be. On the other hand, apparently noone will bother if I'll keep changing my presentation till the last minute and I'm not sure if its a good thing or not..
Its just so many things to do, so many forms to hand in that I'm already feeling half convinced that I will forget about some things. (Especially as the email remainders are bound to be sent 5 minutes before closing of the office... or maybe I should check my post ever 1 1/2 minutes??)
Whatever..
At least I had some nice lunch break outside enjoying the sun and a nice chat. What more can I demand of this day ;)

Computer Scientists Night Out

As I promised, here are some quotes from this evening's glass of wine... it is very interesting how philosophical some people will become after tasting some South Africa and some California...

When I was writing the post before, I just thought of my evening yesterday, cooking and eating with five computer guys.. :) In case you read this, I want to tell you that it was one of the most pleasant evenings I spent in quite a while and I really felt like at home.

Ridiculous

Today I was asked by one of my collegues if I wouldnt occasionally be fed up with my nearly exclusively male coursemates.. I have to admit that this happens occasionally, and usually I will escape to my all girls hall to relax from it...
However, there is this new tendency of non computer science people to absolutely ridicule everything that has to do with the matter (and it seems to happen especially if they have asked a question and dont understand the answer. Instead of making them feel bad about it, I am idiotic enough to try to explain in a simple way what it is about). So I seriously wonder why people will be so disrespectful towards their emergency 'angels' whom they wont let go to bed or even let eat in peace once their computer has the slightest flaw (let alone a complete disaster).
To be honest, these situations nearly make me feel homesick to my fellow 'weirdos' and the faculty, a place where next to hard work and desperation also understanding and respect for ones work can be found...
If any of you reading this post is a non computer scientist, spend a second thinking if you tend to bash the people that are employed in this sort of job that to you might seem absolutely counter intuitive and weird.. and if yes, think if it might be the case that you do them seriously wrong. Oh, and maybe also think whom you're calling at midnight if your computer has something funny...
