About Computer Scientists...

it is worrying, but on occasions I realise that in fact I do start to identify myself with this term.. But at the same time, I am developing a slight allergy towards certain small brained people broadcasting in complete obliviousness some very nice rumors about 'us'...
Recent conversation:

'Dont worry about leaving your girlfriend alone with a computer scientist, he wouldnt know what to do with her!' - 'Of course they would!! They would take her to the museum to admire the van Neumann machine!'

(ok, kidding, I didnt reply this...) what I said was:

'How can you be so sure?' - 'I KNOW these guys.....(nodding very satisfied..)'
'Really?? I know some of them too..' - 'No, come on... everybody knows this is the truth..'
'But... I've studied with them for 3 years (and I think I could find counter examples)' - 'eh? WHAT?'
'I just finished studies in Computer Science.'

- 'YOU?!?! (slightly shrill voice) But - you're a WOMAN?!?!? (this is soo scandalous, how could you possibly do SUCH a thing... )'

I don't think that these rumors are too bad after all. Indeed, they should be kept alive. I mean, this is the most elegant way to get at another one's girl! "What about letting her spending the evening with me?? Hey, you can trust me, I'm a computer geek, I don't know what to do with her...."

anyway, it would be really interesting to know why there are so few women into computers.. is it just not interesting for most? too technical? or are these choices bound to a certain gender image developed by modern (and ancient) society?

btw, I teach various computer topics at a sort of highschool to a total of ~56 students, of which 3 are girls. there is also a project going on trying to involve more girls with "technical" jobs (http://www.bozen.berufsschule.it/de/projekte/30_533.htm)

Probably because there are still some professors who do not believe a girl in computer science can be good at it. From my personal experience, one professor could not believe I could have done the project we had to do for the programming languages course, a prolog interpreter in lisp. I hope that chauvinist burns in hell.

A Prolog interpreter in Lisp?!? It's a miracle that anyone would continue studying CS when being assigned such a strange task (well, once I had to write a C compiler in Ocaml, that's not much better...)
